Radiotherapy is a treatment method aimed at eliminating tumor cells by applying ionizing radiation generated by radiation therapy devices to the diseased area. Treatments are administered in daily sessions and may extend over days or weeks. The duration and method of treatment are determined by radiation oncologists.
The purpose of radiotherapy is to destroy cancer cells while minimizing damage to the surrounding healthy tissues.
Tomotherapy, a type of external radiotherapy, differs from standard radiotherapy devices in its treatment approach. The tomotherapy device operates on the principle of Computed Tomography (CT), delivering treatment by helically scanning the tumor tissue. The IGRT (Image-Guided Radiation Therapy) image obtained prior to treatment is acquired in the same manner, minimizing errors in the positioning of the tumor tissue to be irradiated. This ensures a more precise and safer treatment process.
